How to Make Custom Stickers: Every Method, and When Each One Makes Sense

There are three ways to end up with custom stickers: cut them yourself with a craft machine, print them at home and cut by hand, or send the file to a printer. All three are legitimate. Which one is right depends almost entirely on how many you need and whether they have to survive water and sun.

We print stickers for a living, so we have an obvious interest in one of those answers. We've written the other two out properly anyway, because the honest truth is that below a certain quantity, making them yourself is the sensible choice.

What are stickers actually made of?

Every sticker is three layers, whether it's made in a spare room or on a commercial press:

  • The face stock — the printable surface. Either a coated paper or a plastic film, most often vinyl. This layer decides whether the sticker survives water.
  • The adhesive — permanent or removable, and rated for different surfaces and temperatures.
  • The liner — the silicone-coated backing you peel away.

A finished outdoor sticker usually adds a fourth: a clear laminate over the print, which is what protects the ink from UV and scuffing. Most of the difference between a sticker that lasts three months and one that lasts three years is in the face stock and that laminate, not the printing.

How do you make stickers at home with a cutting machine?

This is the method most people mean, and it's the one that produces a genuinely professional-looking result. Machines from Cricut, Silhouette and similar brands all work the same way for stickers, using a mode usually called Print Then Cut.

  1. Design at the finished size in the machine's own software, or import a PNG with a transparent background. Add a cut line offset slightly outside the artwork — a small white border is much more forgiving than cutting flush to the edge.
  2. Print onto adhesive sticker paper or printable vinyl. The software adds registration marks — the black frame or corner brackets around the sheet — which the machine's optical sensor reads to know exactly where the printed image landed.
  3. Laminate, if the sticker needs to be waterproof. Cold laminating sheets, applied by hand with a squeegee, are the usual route. Do this before cutting, not after.
  4. Load the sheet and cut. Set the blade to kiss cut — through the face and laminate but not the liner — so the stickers stay on the backing sheet and peel off one at a time.

The one step people skip is a test cut on a scrap corner. Blade depth that's slightly too deep cuts through the liner and ruins the sheet; slightly too shallow and the stickers tear when you peel them.

Can you make stickers with just a printer and scissors?

Yes, and for a handful of stickers it's completely reasonable. Print onto full-sheet adhesive paper and cut the shapes out by hand.

The limits are honest ones: hand-cutting more than a few dozen is genuinely tedious, the edges won't be consistent, and intricate shapes are impractical. A rounded rectangle or a circle cut with a craft punch looks fine. A detailed mascot outline does not.

What sticker paper should you use?

This is where most home-made stickers go wrong, so it's worth getting specific.

  • Adhesive paper is the cheapest and prints beautifully, but it is paper. It absorbs water, and no amount of coating changes that. Fine for planners, packaging inserts, gift tags, anything indoors and dry.
  • Printable vinyl is a plastic film. It doesn't absorb water at all, which is what makes a sticker survive a water bottle or a car.
  • Weatherproof or matte photo vinyl sits at the top of the home range, and is what you want for anything going outdoors.

One practical warning worth knowing before you buy: most printable adhesive vinyl is rated for inkjet printers only. Laser printers fuse toner with heat, and that heat can warp or damage films not designed for it. Check the packaging rather than assuming — it's stated on almost every pack.

How do you make home-made stickers waterproof?

Two things both have to be true, and people usually only do one.

The material has to be plastic, not paper. Laminating a paper sticker traps the paper under a clear film, but water still reaches it through the cut edges, and the paper swells.

The ink has to hold. Most home inkjets use dye-based ink, which dissolves in water — a printed sheet will smear under a wet thumb. Pigment-based inks resist water far better. If your printer takes both, the pigment cartridge is the one you want for stickers. Either way, a cold laminate over the top is what makes the result genuinely reliable.

What does making your own actually cost?

The honest answer is that the per-sticker cost starts very high and falls slowly.

Your first sticker costs whatever the cutting machine cost, plus the paper, plus the laminate, plus a couple of hours learning the software. Your hundredth is much cheaper. Somewhere past that, the maths turns again — because the constraint stops being money and starts being your time. Print Then Cut works a sheet at a time, and a sheet holds maybe six to twelve stickers depending on size. Four hundred stickers is a long evening of feeding sheets, laminating them by hand and weeding the results.

That's the real crossover point, and it's about labour rather than materials.

When does it stop making sense to make your own?

Rough guidance, from watching which orders come to us after someone has tried it themselves:

  • Under about 50 stickers of one design: making your own is usually the better call, especially if you already own the machine.
  • 50 to a few hundred: genuinely a toss-up. Depends on what your time is worth and how much you enjoy the process.
  • Several hundred or more, or anything going on a vehicle, outdoors, or on a product you're selling: professional printing wins on both cost per unit and durability, and it isn't close.

The durability gap matters more than the price gap. Commercial vinyl and laminate are rated for years of outdoor exposure. Home materials generally aren't, and a sticker that fades in one summer on a customer's water bottle costs more in reputation than it saved.

How do commercial printers make stickers differently?

Three things change at production scale.

The printing. Wide-format UV or eco-solvent printers cure ink onto the vinyl rather than soaking it in, which is why the colour doesn't run or fade the way a home inkjet print does.

The laminate. Applied by machine under even pressure across the whole roll, so there are no bubbles and no gaps at the edges — the failure point of hand-laminating.

The cutting. A plotter follows your artwork's exact outline for die cut singles, or scores just the face layer for kiss cut sheets. Same principle as a home machine, considerably more precise, and it doesn't slow down at quantity.

How do you get custom stickers professionally printed?

The process is shorter than most people expect:

  1. Send the artwork. Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF, SVG) are ideal because they scale without softening. A high-resolution PNG with a transparent background works too — 300 DPI at the finished size.
  2. Choose size, quantity and finish — matte, gloss, holographic, clear.
  3. Check the proof. We send a PDF proof before anything is printed, which is where sizing mistakes and low-resolution files get caught. Nothing goes to print without your approval.

What if your artwork isn't print-ready?

The most common problems we catch on proofs are resolution too low for the requested size, artwork with no bleed at the edges, and designs with details so fine they'd tear when peeled. All three are fixable before printing and expensive to discover afterwards, which is the entire reason the proof step exists.
