How to Design and Print Custom Bumper Stickers

Stevie Minner

Custom bumper stickers are one of the oldest forms of moving advertising, and they still work for the same reason they always have: a car covers a lot of ground, and the message rides along for free. Designing one that actually reads at a distance takes a bit more thought than a regular sticker, though.

What Makes Bumper Stickers Different

A bumper sticker lives outdoors full time. Sun, rain, road salt, car washes — it takes all of it, year round, which is why the material matters more here than for almost any other sticker type. Standard sizing runs longer and narrower than most stickers too, usually somewhere around 3" x 11.5", built to fit a bumper or tailgate.

Designing a Bumper Sticker People Can Actually Read

The whole test is whether a driver two car lengths back can read it in about two seconds. That rules out thin fonts, low contrast, and long sentences. One short line, big bold type, and two or three colours that fight each other for attention will beat a clever paragraph every time.

  • Keep the message under seven or eight words. Shorter reads faster.
  • Dark text on a light background, or the reverse — never mid-tone on mid-tone.
  • Leave breathing room at the edges so nothing important sits near the trim line.

What to Look For When You Print Bumper Stickers

Material first: you want thick vinyl with a UV-resistant laminate, or the colours wash out after a summer in the sun. The adhesive matters just as much — strong enough to survive a car wash, but clean enough to peel off without wrecking the paint when the message has run its course. A printer that sends a proof before the run is worth choosing over one that doesn't, full stop.

Worth knowing before you commit: a bumper sticker left on through five Canadian winters comes off far harder than one swapped each season. Warming it with a hair dryer for thirty seconds before peeling is the difference between lifting it off in one piece and spending an afternoon with a scraper.

Order custom bumper stickers at the standard 3" x 11.5" or a size of your own.
