Vinyl Sticker FAQs: Durability, Surfaces and Removal

Most questions about vinyl stickers come down to three things: how long they'll last, what they'll stick to, and how much of a fight they put up when you want them gone. Here are straight answers to the ones we field most often, along with the specifics of how we print ours.
How long do vinyl stickers last?
Our vinyl stickers are printed with UV-resistant inks and carry a scratch-resistant surface coating, and the material is tested to hold up through Canadian weather extremes — which, at both ends of the year, is a real test.
As a general expectation rather than a guarantee, printed vinyl outdoors holds its colour for several years before sun exposure starts to dull it. Indoors it lasts considerably longer, since nothing is bleaching a sticker on a filing cabinet. What shortens that life is sun and abrasion rather than water. A sticker on a south-facing car window ages faster than the same sticker on the door of the same car.
Are vinyl stickers waterproof?
Yes. The material is waterproof, which is why it's the right choice for outdoor use — rain, dishwater, a bottle left in a cooler overnight.
That's not the same as indestructible. Scrubbing with an abrasive sponge will wear the print down over time, and months of steam and heat can lift an edge that wasn't pressed properly to begin with. On the dishwasher question, which comes up constantly: the sticker survives the water, but the heated drying element is what shortens its life. Hand-wash anything you care about.
What surfaces do vinyl stickers stick to?
The adhesive bonds to most clean surfaces: glass, painted metal, hard plastic, sealed wood, powder-coated surfaces, laptop shells and vehicle panels. Clean is the operative word — dust, wax or oil on the surface is the usual reason a sticker fails to hold.
Where they struggle:
- Rough or textured surfaces such as brick, stucco and unfinished wood
- Anything carrying silicone or oil, including some phone cases
- Fabric and canvas, where the fibres give the adhesive nothing flat to grip
- Low-energy plastics like polypropylene and some polyethylene containers
How do you apply one without bubbles?
Clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry. Skip household glass cleaner, which leaves a film behind. Peel the backing, set one edge down first, then press across with a credit card or squeegee so the air is pushed out toward the far edge. If a bubble does form, a pin prick at its edge and a thumb press will usually flatten it.
How do you remove one, and the residue?
Because the adhesive is built to bond hard, removal works best with heat. Thirty seconds with a hair dryer softens it enough that the sticker peels off in one piece rather than shredding into flakes. Whatever glue stays behind comes off with isopropyl alcohol on a cloth. Keep acetone away from painted and plastic surfaces, though, since it strips adhesive and finish with equal enthusiasm.
Vinyl stickers or vinyl decals?
People use the two words interchangeably, but there's a real difference. A printed vinyl sticker is a full piece of vinyl carrying your artwork, cut to shape. A cut vinyl decal has no background at all: the shape itself is cut from coloured vinyl and transferred across, so only the letters or the logo land on the surface.
If what you want is a printed design with no visible background, that's a third option again — clear stickers print straight onto transparent vinyl so only the artwork shows. Our post on stickers versus decals goes into the distinction further.
What files do you need from me?
We accept PDF, AI, EPS, PNG, JPG and PSD. A few things that make the difference between a good print and a soft one:
- 300 DPI minimum, or a vector file if your design is a logo or type
- CMYK preferred, though RGB is accepted
- 0.125" bleed if the artwork runs edge to edge
- Fonts outlined, or send the font files along
